An account of the death of Anthony Mills:

Some members of the Mills Hammons family had killed a bear. Several brothers, sisters, in-laws had met to have a feast. The men had prepared the bear for cooking and the women were doing the cooking for the feast. Meantime, the men were trying out a new rifle at a spot. Anthomy went to replace the spot and the rifle was accidently fired by a brother of Lucretia, Anthony's wife, and Anthony was struck by the bullet and died. It was said no bear was eaten that day.

21 A Life Remembered and Cherished

Shirley Louise Bishop Kent was born on a farm south of Woodburn, Iowa on December 25, 1928 to Dave and Nora Bishop. Shirley passed away on Thursday, July 18, 2019 surrounded by her loving family. She was one of twelve children. Shirley attended Redwing Rural School through eighth grade and graduated from Lacona High School as part of the Class of 1948. While in high school Shirley worked as a waitress and a rural telephone operator to help purchase her clothing and books.

Shirley was united in marriage to Keith Kent on March 13, 1949 at the home of her older sister, Wilda Clark, in Lacona, Iowa. Keith and Shirley recently celebrated 70 years of marriage.

To this union four children were born: Daniel Eugene, Victoria Louise, Mary Beth, and Oscar Kevin. In 1950 Keith and Shirley started a soil conservation business for farmers which later developed into a successful construction business known as Keith E. Kent, Inc. Together they operated this business for 35 years. Shirley maintained the books, managed the office, and kept Keith in line over the two-way radio.

Shirley was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Shirley showed her love through her cooking, baking, quilting, and gardening. Everyone loved to see Shirley walk into a family gathering with one of her famous pies, tea rings, or homemade rolls. Shirley?s talents in these areas will live on in her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren who continue to use her recipes today. Each grandchild is blessed to have received a quilt made by Shirley when they were married and each great grandchild received a quilt upon their birth. All members of the family look forward to receiving a hand written birthday card from Shirley every year.

Throughout her 90 years of life Shirley?s strong presence could be felt throughout the community of Lucas. Shirley served as a Sunday school teacher and board member of the Lucas Presbyterian Church where she and Keith were longtime members. Shirley was a 4-H leader when her children were active in 4-H. Keith and Shirley, along with other community members, helped to establish the Lucas Betterment Committee which continues to serve the community of Lucas. Shirley served tirelessly in the Lucas Community Center kitchen and volunteered weekly at the John L. Lewis museum. For those who don't know, Shirley was a bit of a legend at the Lucas Farmers and Miners Bank. Her quick thinking assisted in the apprehension of two criminals who robbed the bank while Shirley was there for business.

Shirley is preceded in death by her parents and ten of her siblings. Left to cherish Shirley's memories are her husband, Keith, her four children Daniel (Deb), Victoria (Ron) Boyd, Mary Beth (Gary) Boyd, Kevin (Debbie), her nine grandchildren, Aaron (Jody) Boyd, Danica (Chris) Harris, Ryan Boyd, Derek (Kelli) Kent, Nicholas (Kristen) Boyd, Jody (Tanner) Sandy, Natalie (David) Braun, Abbey (Randy) Metzger, Kayla (Brandon) Bond, 22 great-grandchildren and her sister, Jean Chipp.

Shirley's life will be celebrated as follows: Visitation from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Sunday, July 21, 2019 at Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton, Iowa. Funeral service to be held Monday, July 22, 2019 at 10:30 am at Fielding Funeral Home. Graveside burial service to immediately follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Lucas, Iowa. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be given to the Lucas Presbyterian Church.

27 Departed Liverpool, England and arrived 24 Jun 1912 in Quebec, Canada.

Grandma Irene Paavola stated that his family had left for the state while he was gone training reindeer. Upon learning this he saved his money to be a ticket to get to the US. He had a ticket for the Titanic but missed the ship and ended up taking the next ship.

I believe that Henry ended up on the SS Canada which was part of a passenger service jointly operated by the White Star Line and Dominion Line (the Titanic was part of the White Star Line). The Titanic departed on 10 April 1912 so the story that he missed the Titanic is plausible.
Paavola, Heikki Samuli (P20)

28 Entered Service in 1779 served 3 months as a private under Captn Samuel Barrow, Colonel Seawell and Sitgraves NC Regiment. In 1780 he served under Captn Wiulliam Herritage and Major Pasteur, Three Months

He left a will which was evidently destroyed in the Pitt County NC Courthouse fire, for references to it were made in subsequent land deeds. Nasby had extensive land holdings in the Black Jack area which he passed on to his children. The names of Nasby and Keziah "Kizzie" have been passed down for many generations, even until today.

Nasby was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, and was pensioned as such. His pension records are in the North Carolina State Archives.

33 From Internet [1]:
Jesse C. Turnage enrolled in the Missouri Militia October 2, 1862. The story goes that on 18 July 1864, 2LT Turnage was on leave and working in his fields in Ray County, Missouri. "Bloody Bill" Anderson and his gang of guerrillas came upon Turnage, and knowing his role in the Militia, tied him up and interrogated him. Anderson then decided that Turnage would die and a member of his gang cut the Soldier's throat. The story continues that the gang then went to the Turnage family home and forced Turnage's wife, Esther, to make them food.

A tragic story, but is it true? This incident took place in Ray County, Missouri, and I can find no copy of the local newspaper for that date. Library holdings stop a week prior to 18 July 1864. But such an event must have been recorded in the daily reports of the 51st EMM. The Cornell University Library has digitized the entire volume of The Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. In this publication I was able to find a report dated 18 July 1864 from Joseph E. Black to Brigadier General Clinton B. Fisk. The report states in part:

"On the 18th they [guerrillas] passed northwest of Richmond, about seven miles from the city, murdering Lieutenant Turnage, of company D, Fifty-first Regiment Enrolled Missouri Militia...Lieutenant Turnage was shot three times in the head and his throat was cut from ear to ear."

46 LENN D. KENT

Glenn Donald Kent was born on July 16, 1926 to Oscar and Mary (Cochran) Kent in Lucas, Iowa. He passed away at the Legacy Lodge Hospice on Friday, April 20, 2018 at the age of 91 years.

Glenn grew up on his family farm in Lucas, Iowa. He attended the Lucas Community School and graduated from Lucas High School in 1945. On November 21, 1954, Glenn was united in marriage to Lucy Keller in Princeton, Missouri. With this union, five children were raised: Denny, Martha, Don, Karen and Gary.

Glenn farmed most all of his life and never really retired as farming was his passion. In addition to farming, he worked for the Solar Airplane Factory, owned a gas station and worked for his brother. Glenn loved doing custom work and hauling to the surrounding sale barns. His family described him as a great family provider who loved to have fun with his ornery personality.

In his spare time, Glenn enjoyed playing softball with the local teams such as Harry's Boys and the Butt Heads.
